McLane Associates usually adds to our team 2 - 3 interns per summer. The internship positions center around landscape architecture and environmental science, however, we have utilized a business intern and graphic design intern as well.

Interns do not get coffee - they become an integral part of the firm and they are required to take on projects and share responsibility for the successful completion of tasks. In addition to helping with the normal office workload, the interns can participate in the McLane Internship Program (which started in summer 2010), where they become the project manager.

McLane Internship Program
To foster independence each intern or a group of interns will be assigned a community service project – This is the core of the McLane Internship Program. Our firm has multiple contacts within the community and especially with non-profit organizations. During the winter, we identify worthwhile projects within the community that our interns will be able to manage. The projects can range from landscaping a non-profit’s building or a community park to streambank stabilization or raingarden construction.

The interns will work on the project from concept development, through construction. They must meet with the landowners, design concepts, present their concepts, create construction drawings and finally organize a construction crew to implement the design. Throughout the process the interns will get hands on training in CAD, sketching, design, public speaking, estimating, construction, project management, etc…
